 Painful puffy head packaging, not the regular style October 7, 2008
I'll leave the debate about the actual quality of the 11th Season to others.
But note that this particular item is the "Limited Edition Collector's Box" with Krusty's face protruding from the front of the box. You can identify in the box shot with the white lettering in the upper left corner.
Apparently there is a standard packaging version (which I prefer). Currently that's listed on Amazon (with no box shot) for 25% more than the limited edition packaging costs.
So buyer beware, if like me, you don't like the difficult-to-store limited edition packages.
Pretty solid for latter-day Simpsons October 7, 2008
I swear, I keep buying these Simpsons seasons (particularly after 9) thinking "OK, I remember this being the last good one." Its true, the show did decline in quality over the years, but I am consistently surprised with how good these old seasons are. For me, 11 is a solid buy.
"Beyond Bluderdome" is an odd and kind of awkward episode, and even though it sports a pretty solid Mel Gibson role its a strange way to begin a season. However, things get back on track quickly with the funny and solid "Brother's little Helper" and "Guess Who's coming to criticize dinner". Both feature strong plots, funny jokes, and good character work.
This season's "Treehouse of Horrors" is fairly weak (not to mention pretty slim on the actual horror... how is Xena related to Halloween?) The "I Know what you did..." parody feels very rushed and has only a few chuckles in it, "Xeeking Xeena" is almost intentionally cheesy, and while the final "Y2K" segment has its moments (and is the best of the three) its too weak to save the whole thing, which suffers from being very light on atmosphere and way too heavy on tepid sophomoric humor (squishy eye-poking, stretchy butt-shaking, etc).
The rest of the season is up and down... there are some very weak episodes like the stupid, painfully uncool "Take my wife, sleaze" which shamefully wastes the talents of John Goodman and the simply inexplicable "Grift of the Magi" which just goes nowhere.
In the late seasons, a few off episodes are no surprise. The surpsie is the real standouts - classic episodes like "E-I-E-I (annoyed grunt)" aka the Tomacco, "Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder" which has a real sweetness to its hilarity, "the Mansion family" which is inspired lunacy just barely avoiding going way over the top, "Bart to the Future" and "Little Big Mom", two character-centered episodes which work well and provide plenty of laughs, and the spot-on (though non-canon) parody "Behind the Laughter". Parody can be pretty dangerous road to go down for a character-driven show like this (example: last season's painful "24" parody) but "Behind the Laughter" plays to the strengths of the actors and the characters-- and it doesn't hurt that its main target lends itself easily to satire. A few episodes this season also affect future episodes is pretty substantial ways, for instance "Alone Again, Natura-diddly" and "Eight Misbehavin'" which are only average episodes but have a major impact on the shape of Springfield in future seasons.
If you are the sort who is inclined to buy Simpsons seasons, this probably isn't the one to start with, but if you've got them all so far, this probably isn't the one to stop at, either. There are a few telling signs of the show's decline, but there are enough classic moments left to make this one an easy to recommend.

I just received my new Simpsons season 11 box set, (even a day early-- Thanks Amazon!!) however the packaging is a big accordion folding thing and the dvd's are placed within the cardboard in a cardboard sleeve and is by far the worst packaging I have ever seen! These DVD's are going to be all scratched up after just a few uses and are way more difficult then necessary to remove from the sleeves, who ever designed this needs to be fired asap!
The quality of the discs are just fine and I have no complaints about them. If the packaging was improved I would give a 5 star rating.

Warning...this is the season that contains the abyssmal "Behind the Laughter" espisode. It's so unfunny, and wallows in it's own ineptness, to the degree that even die-hard fans began hoping for the cancellation of the show (so that it didn't become diluted with lame newer episodes thrown into the synication mix, which is exactly what happened). This is the first really bad season of this once great comedy, which literally sparked off the animation revolution of the 90's. The best writers had bailed to work on Futurama....sigh....and that was pretty much it for the classic Simpsons era. If you own the first 10, why would you want to shell out for this?

I can pull a better cartoon out of my... hey hey! Not a very good season and you are better off spending your money elsewhere.
