Not sure about this yet December 2, 2008 I purchased my Archos 5 a week ago from PC world, I loved the sleek look and the HD capacity and the codec's that are available. I looked into iphone touch too but realised that the type of movie files that one can use it for is very limited.
I thought go for Archos 5..
Well.. So far I keep my cool to avoid bollocking from wife since I justified the cost of it by saying it does everything that ipod touch would do and more.
In theory it's correct.. But
I have few BUTs really
1) I came home with excitement of my new toy and first disappointment was that it didn't come with an AC adepter. You need to charge the gadget with a USB and I rather have an AC adapter option so that I can use it when I am not mobile to keep battery life linger ... so currently looking in to a solution to that which will cost extra
2) I logged in to internet through wifi.. Which was easy enough then realised that opera is not that fast browser after all.. Especially the touch screen interface responds not so cleverly.. But one can get used to it and learn to operate better in time (knowing how easy the iphone doesn't help to feel better anyway)
3) I logged in to you tube since we live in UK and not from here originally and wife loves the idea of watching TV series on you tube and I sold her the idea of Archos thorough that !!!!.. In order to watch you tube I needed to spend 25 pounds und downloads a plug in, ,. I was disappointed but did it anyway... guess what ... now I can see but don't hear the videos. I sent an email to Archos, awaiting their answer !!
I still love my toy and the screen is very good, picture quality is fantastic. And 120 gigs is great capacity..
Well it's a great prototype of a potentially very popular product of near future
I can see everyone will have one of these all in one type of gadget (Media player, internet browsing, gps, voice recorder, video camera, phone, fm radio)
Great product with a few snags November 24, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ordered this product to be used as a video player while I am at work, and it functions very well as a video player. I also own a Zune and this blows the Zune out of the water. I will list some of the pro's and cons.
Pro's Huge screen size, easily the best PMP screen I have ever seen, crisp and clear and bright, no jagged edges in the video.
Drag and drop ability. You are able to use media player to sync with this player, but you can also just drag and drop your files into folders. I don't need backups of the video files so this is good for me.
The ability to delete items that are on the device. Once I am done with a episode I can delete it to keep space free and keep track of what I have watched.
Built in speaker, It is a little tinny and gets distorted at high volumes but it much better than the psp's built in speakers.
Touch screen is the right sensitivity and very easy to use.
No need to convert files if you have them in xvid. This saves alot of time compared to the zune or ipod which only play mp4.
Cons
Wireless internet and browser work well from home but does not work from many locations on the road.
20$ for a codec pack is a bit much, I'd be more inclined to buy a DVR station or other add ons if they would include the codecs.
Battery takes a long time to charge with the included USB charger. The battery life is also fairly short. 4 hrs or so for video.
Power charging plug is located on the bottom of the device which makes it next to impossible to watch videos while charging.
Overall this is the best media player for video on the market. I own a zune and have used an ipod touch and PSP in the past. This blows them away in nearly every area. If you are looking for a great video player then look no further. If you are just looking for an MP3 player with video capabilites then pick up a zune or Ipod.
not satisfied November 23, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
It works well for a mp3 player.
I really bought this device because I wanted a handheld PDF viewer, I was torn between either this with a hard drive you can actually keep files on, or some ipod device where you can't actually keep PDFs on your hard drive without doing ridiculous workarounds. I bought this device after deciding the 250 GB memory was totally worth it. When the device arrived, I had to update the firmware as most people will point out. The instruction manual was not helpful at all when it came to this. I have had 3 random resets so far. When I finally got some PDFs loaded up on the thing, most were viewable. The only problem is, it takes 5-10 seconds to load a page in a PDF, and you can only navigate between pages with a scroll bar, which is less than helpful on a 400 page e-book where the slightest move in the bar goes past 10 pages. The scrolling isn't smooth at all, it is rather jumpy. Getting back to when I was saying most of my PDFs were viewable: I have some PDFs with some asian text scattered about them, and instead of just not displaying those particular characters, since I already realized the device wasn't built with that support, the PDF wouldn't even display, it would load the first page, and then go back to the directory.
I realize most of you people don't care much about reading on a hand-held device, but if you are one like me that is still looking for the perfect e-book reader with support for all file types, this device is not the "one." We'll just have to keep waiting until a good one finally comes out =(
Product Seduces You Then Disappoints ... November 14, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
It only takes a few moments for this product to seduce you but within a few hours you are left broken hearted and disappointed. Outstanding picture performance and functioning in all areas except the following:
* Faulty pop-up keyboard rejects 100,000 ATT and 45,000 T-Mobile hot spots * All Starbucks & Barnes & Nobel connections prevented, software failure * Built in speaker is useless due to little volume. * Video Recording fails to work. Unable to get local programs guides. * Company techs say HD plug in not sold out, but glitches prevent release * Video is structured for analog only due to HD plug in's not available. * Video playback in analog only means displays over 32" are very poor * No built in or optional microphone prevents use of all IM voice, memos or VOIP programs * Customer service & tech support listen well and are understanding but they are unwilling to provide resolutions or dates of product fixes. * Home programming keyboard is too small and awkward to hold in both hands and to use thumbs for entry ... this is a one finger unit which for a home unit is not necessary. Most frustrating.
I hated to return this produce due to the above failures but it is clear to see that the product was rushed out prematurely to meet the holiday product season without proper testing and support. In a few months with some product redesign and consideration it is clear this product will be re-released with a new model # and will be the ultimate way to go.
I really am heartbroken ... shame on you ARCHOS !!!
Archos 5 The Awesomest PMP!(?) November 12, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm an iPod fan. Yes, i've owned every version/generation and probably will continue to do so. But when I met the Archos family something clicked. It was like meeting that cute girl across the room for the first time.
I first was introduced to Archos about 3 years ago. My friend had some movies and music on his. It was interesting. I didn't have much need for such a bulky product. But then I came across the Archos 5 online and did some research. It was perfect, or so I thought...
Let's start with the basic Pros:
1. It's big enough to watch video on without hurting your eyes.
2. It's recent firmware updates have kept this guy going strong since i've bought it.
3. The hard drive is HUGE! If you are using this for mp3's and videos on long trips you will have more than enough space. We drove from San Francisco to L.A. and back and never ran out of media.
4. It's sturdy. You don't feel like you are going to break it while you are using it.
5. When you have the right accessories this thing wails on the competition.
A> The DVR Station is well worth the extra $100. It can use your Archos as a DVR and you can record those TV programs or On Demand Movies for your watching pleasure. I'm also a DJ/VJ so I can record my sets with video in real time from the club. You also get the handy DC charger so as not to use USB to charge your device.
B> Buy the plug-ins, they rock, and it's worth the money to make sure you are using the Archos 5's full potential.
6. The internet, mail and other appz work just fine. I have not had anything crash, bug, or tweak out yet.
7. Battery Time is AWESOME! The numbers are pretty high, I did about 6 hours for video and over 12 for audio with more life remaining.
Ok, now the cons:
1. You do have to pay for the extra accessories. Some of the prices can be steep.
2. Some plug-ins aren't available yet.
3. The Archos website is pretty lame and confusing. Be careful there, you may end up buying something from th UK store by accident.
OVERALL:
The Archos 5 is a feat of genius. I can check my mail and surf the web from any wifi. I can watch days of movies, listen to weeks of audio. Share my pictures with friends. I can record t.v. and any other audio/video source I put in to it (with the dvr station or dvr snap-on or course). I have not had any battery or program bugs at all in the month I have owned it.
For your $400-$500 for a reliable sturdy, forward thinking touchscreen PMP that's miles above the iPod, the Archos is perfect. If you don't want to invest in, or have the need to go to some of the extremes i've listed, stick with the Zune or iPod. They will play just about anything you want them too, but they aren't as flexible as the Archos 5.
