5 out of 5 stars Answering the Call   December 2, 2008
Just for the record, this review for the multiplayer part of the game, you know, the reason why you're reading this thinking about buying it because you're worried about it not being like COD4...

I'm only reviewing the multiplayer because I played about 3 levels of the solo campaign. Not because it was bad, they were awesome opening levels, I just wanted to see if the multiplayer experience was as addicting as COD4 was.. I guess you could figure how it is on your own.

Taking the COD4 engine and building this game around it has got to be the smartest thing the game developers could've done. Now, I know what your thinking, C, why in the world would I blow $60 on COD W@W when so many praise it for being just like COD4, and I already have that in my PS3 right now??? Well, because it's not like COD4!

What in the blue hell am I talking about? I know, it's weird. But as much as it's a clone of 2007's Game of the Year, at the same time it's something much different. Reason 1, it's not modern warfare (i.e. fancy guns, sweet attachments, night vision goggles etc.) Nope, it's World War II. You know, that one war you swore up and down that you'd never play in a game again. Well, for everyone not paying attention to the details and just bought the newest game box with the name Call of Duty slapped on it got a big bite in the... you know. And here is where sooooooo maaaaaaany people say this is nothing like COD4 and it's the reason why the game is getting it's bad reviews. Not because it's a bad game but because the die hard COD4 players that were looking forward to the continuation of Modern Warfare hit a brick wall and woke up in the most overdone era of First Person Shooter history.

Being someone that didn't stop playing COD4 for months straight but like many, got tired of the same ol stuff everyday, this installment is exactly what I was hoping it was going to be. The same amazing gameplay and addictive multiplayer, but a completely different feel at the same time that made it much more challenging and engaging. If you're someone that played COD4 like it was the last game in the world there is no reason why W@W shouldn't take it's place...

Well, except the tanks... honestly, ONLY negative. Stupid, stupid tanks. Easy to blow up if you know what you're doing and got the right tools but it's just a little off balance if you don't have anything to fight them with.

But screw the tanks and do yourself a favor.. get the game. There's a lot of the same but there's too many differences to pass it up.

Seriously, it's easy, scroll up, add it to your cart, type in that special combo of numbers and see me on the battlefield in few days.

I'll be waiting...

3 out of 5 stars An Honest Review   December 1, 2008
Seriously, this game is fun but in my opinion it is not as good as COD4. The graphics are pretty amazing on some maps but the color scheme has gotten to me after while. I feel like I am watching Saving Private Ryan as everything has got that drab 1940's color scheme to it. Yeah I realize this is the setting for the game but it gets old quick. Single player is fun but it's just ok. Multiplayer is why people buy this game so let's talk about that. Not feeling it. Does that say enough? Coming from COD4 to COD WaW is an adjustment. The weapons are so different. Rifles are all semi automatic and the sub machine guns are not so great either. The sniper rifles are all bolt action rifles and you have to earn a scope for them so in the beginning it's pretty tough. I actually do like one or two of the sniper rifles but it's just not the same for me. I did like the heavy machine guns though. Thought they were unique and fun. As for the online gameplay...THEY NEED TO FIX IT.....errors after every match getting back into the lobby....constant connections being lost during the matches. It's rare that you can play 4-5 matches in a row without a connection error.....Quite often you can sit in a lobby waiting for people to join your game for 5-10 minutes before it fills up with enough people and this is also when there are over 80k people playing online!.....Hardcore games should be exactly that, harcore. None of this last stand nonsense or martyrdom in hardcore games. Last Stand is ridiculous in WaW for a couple of reasons, first...it lasts too long! You can shoot someone and they don't die and if you don't finish them off right away they can last around a minute before they die or someone else comes along and finishes them off and steals your kill.....second...it's like getting 2 lives....when someone has their last stand perk on and you shoot them, they wind up pointing right at you and most of the time wind up shooting you. At least in COD4, they had to pan around to find you and then try to shoot you. What I also don't understand is if you get 7 kills in a row and call in the dogs, it's in your best interest to kill yourself before you actually call them in. I'll tell you why....for some reason the programmers actually count the dog kills towards achieving match perks. So if you get the 7 in a row, kill yourself, call in the dogs and before you know it you'll have at least 3-5 more kills in a row and will be able to call in recon planes and artillery strikes and the dogs all over again. It's a vicious cycle and you'll mop up. Why they did that, I have no idea. The helicopter kills never counted towards match perks in COD4. My biggest gripe about this game is the Respawning. HORRIBLE!! I can't tell you how many times I have respawned in a Team Deathmatch or Free for All game where I wound up spawning right in front of the opponent. I think 25% of all my deaths are because of where I spawned. Last night I played a game and died once legitimately, then died 3 times right after that without having a chance to take a step. This never happened to me EVER in COD4.

If you are a COD4 fan, you might like this game as it has some different things about it but I'll bet that after a while you'll find yourself going back to COD4 cause WaW just doesn't live up to it.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but no better than COD4   December 1, 2008
I have only played the campaign and finished it in a little more 6 hours (all dying included). It's shorter than COD4 but it has also some exciting parts like the tank and hidroplane. Flamethrower is a nice add also. Graphics are nice also.
What I didn't like is that it has many glitches, for example, when shooting several times to an enemy, sometimes nothing happened (as if wasn't there) or it suddenly disappeared and then appears again shooting at you.
The AI of the PC is "not so bright". Sometimes you can stand in front of an enemy and it doesn't do anything, it just stares at you!
It's good to hear that Infinity Ward will make COD6, I feel that they did a better job with COD4 than Treyarch with CODWAW.

5 out of 5 stars It's Great, But I Expected More   November 30, 2008
Off the cusp of possibly the most successful FPS to date, Call of Duty 4, there was no doubting the high expectations people would hold for the next installment. Treyarch have done something very clever as they have taken everything from the old series and enhanced on it, apart from the campaign mode that is, but I'll go into that in a minute. The graphics and basic intense working engine are increased to an epic scale which I honestly can't describe, you get close to 50 AI soldiers on the screen in the more intense battles. This year the Call of Duty series goes back to its roots with the world war 2 depictions. Some said it was a bad idea given the success of the last installment, but this was quashed when we were introduced to possibly the coolest weapon of the game, The Flamethrower. This presents a more graphical and realistic quality to it as the behaviour of the flames and the interraction with the environment only add to the experience.

I mentioned about the campaign mode and feel I need to clear something up. Don't get me wrong, the campaign mode is awesome and is something quite enjoyable, but like the last installment it was way too short. I would say it could easily be completed in about 5 hours, if that. The missions are excellent and quite impactful and entertaining, but unless you're playing it on veteran difficulty, you're going to end the game feeling a little robbed. Like the last game you play through two seperate campaigns. On one side you're an American soldier entering into numerous battles with the Japanese, on the other side you're a soviet soldier retaliating against Nazi forces and eventually take Berlin.

The Multiplayer features much like the old COD4 multiplayer system with its perks for excellent gameplay. Much like COD4, when you're in a multiplayer game, you're rewarded for kill streaks.

3 Kills gives you Recon
5 Kills gives you an artillery strike
7 Kills gives you dogs

Dogs are particularly awesome as you can set them free to attack and kill your fellow online player.

The graphics are really pushed more in this game as well, I mentioned the flamethrower but also the general gore of the game is something to smile about. Say for example you torch someone with the flamethrower, you will witness their charred remains as they lay dead on the ground. Also the use of quite powerful shotguns or even rocket launchers on your enemies blows them into tiny and satisfyingly gory pieces.

Overall I would still highly recommend this game as it's certainly a franchise that will get better and better over time, especially as they push the PS3 processing power further than ever before.
