Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
With the introduction of the Samsung c417, the "basic" handset has been forever redefined. Samsung has taken the most popular features--Bluetooth wireless technology, a VGA camera, instant messaging, and a speakerphone--and added a beautiful 2-inch, 65K color display, and quad-band world coverage. Yet, with all that power and functionality, the c417 still comes in an ultra-thin, ultra-stylish package. It's the perfect choice for the Cingular value-inspired customer who wants a full-featured phone at an affordable price.

Design
The c417 sports a slim, sleek clamshell design with a large 128 x 160 color display with over 65,000 colors. A supplementary, 96 x 64 monochrome OLED screen on the front of the cover keeps you up to speed on time, date, battery and signal strength, and more. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side of the phone, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's also a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets, while the phone's charging port is placed on the bottom of the unit.

Calling Features
With a big 500-contact address book, the c417 is designed to hold all of your important calling information. The phone also features 40-chord polyphonic ringtones, and in addition to the built-in ringers, you can download additional ones from Cingular's MEdia Net service. A vibrate alert silently notifies you of incoming calls when you want to be discreet, and a handy speakerphone lets you talk hands-free or hold conference calls. Meanwhile, ringer and picture ID lets you assign photos and ringtones to callers.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
Powerful messaging and Internet capabilities are built into the c417. Support is provided for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound, and video via MMS messages. Instant messaging is also supported via the AOL and Yahoo! messaging clients. There's even a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing if you opt for the MEdia Net service from Cingular. MEdia Net lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the c417 including a calculator, an alarm, a voice memo recorder, a to-do list, and a calendar.

Entertainment
The c417 takes pictures the way you want to take pictures. The phone allows you to choose from four different picture resolutions, and sports a digital zoom feature. And don't forget, the built-in self-timer allows you to get yourself into the picture. The c417 also allows you to set screensavers, themes and wallpapers to suit your tastes. The phone is Java enabled as well, meaning the phone supports games written on the Java platform.

Vital Statistics
The Samsung SGH-c417 weighs 2.86 ounces and measures 3.66 x 1.89 x 0.65 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 10 days of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

1 out of 5 stars keep looking   August 9, 2008
This phone is frustratingly junky. I'm on my second one - the first one would freeze and crash and the only way to get it to start up again was to physically remove and re-insert the battery. It did that for weeks before it just died altogether. The replacement for that one was fine for a couple months but now I can't keep a call connected for more than 30 seconds before it drops the connection. I've seen on forums that many, many people have had similar problems. Shame on Samsung for not issuing a recall on this piece of crap.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad little phone!   July 30, 2008
I feel the need to defend my cute little Samsung C417, because it's gotten quite a bad rap around the internet.

I've used this phone since March 2007, and have had very few problems with it. Yes, as someone else mentioned, the headset jack is proprietary, and that kind of sucked. Bluetooth has worked like a dream for me, though, despite the fact that you can't sync the phone with a laptop or whatever via Bluetooth. The camera is decent--not wonderful, but isn't that what digital cameras are for? The buttons are a decent size and well-lit. The screen is good. It's very durable--I've dropped it a bunch of times, sometimes from quite a ways up, and it's held up fine through that.

I did have an issue once where I was nosying around the menus and ended up locking myself out of the SIM card and having to have it replaced. It was something under the "security" menu. I found out later, via a Google search, that I could have found out the code I needed to unlock the SIM card on the AT&T website, but by the time I figured it out I had already rendered the SIM card useless. Curiosity killed the cat. It would have been more devastating had I saved all of my contacts to the SIM card rather than the phone.

But, yeah, this isn't a bad little phone, especially for beginners. And it's thin and fits in my pocket without creating a bulge!

1 out of 5 stars Lost Business Clients Due to Samsung C417   October 13, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I have had the Samsung C417 for ten months, and have experienced "Insert SIM Card" problem from day 1. Why did I wait 10 months to do something about it? got me. When this message appears, I cannot make nor receive calls. I must power down and up the phone to clear the SIM error message. After finally reaching me, Clients have told me they had called my phone, but there was no indication of such calls on my C417 phone. Lost business clients is NOT a good thing. I do hope Samsung has fixed this problem by now. If your phone is under warranty, you can call (800)801 1101 to get a "warranty replacement" phone at no cost. Good luck.

2 out of 5 stars could be better   July 9, 2007
I bought this phone back in Oct.06 from cingular during their promo for this phone. I do like the size and compact feature of this phone. Nevertheless, performance is terrible. Callers on the other end complain that they hear static when talking to me. Reception is also poor with this phone. Why can't they make a phone that actually works when you use it. Don't bother with phone.

1 out of 5 stars The worst phone I've had   March 22, 2007

I have bad signal or non at all in places where I used to have signal all the time. A co-worker had the same problem and told her to return before 30 days(wish I had) - Can't change the screen menu. The camera button goes off all the time (badly situated). Not a good ringtone listed. Battery marker will have 3 bars and then none. Can't wait to change it!
